Portable Income

Having a portable income can look like a lot of different things.  You may have the flexibility to work from home… wherever that may be.  If your job just requires you to have computer or phone access, you can make the opportunity for yourself, even if it means that you will have to adjust your work hours to compensate for a time change.

Or, you may have a job that offers a sabbatical or a program where you can work for 4 years and take the 5th off.  Don’t delay!  Sign up and start saving.  Part of having a portable lifestyle is being frugal and valuing experience over consumption, be it on cars, bigger houses, or clothes.  The more minimal your lifestyle is the easier and more portable you will be become.

You may be able to save up to take some unpaid time off, or maybe one of you can.  It’s just like the sacrifices required for time off with a baby, except now you are doing this so as a family you can grow and spend time together, having adventures and just living at a different pace.

Our family’s portable freedom was created through real estate, which we did in an intense way that took 6 years to give us the flexibility to spend time overseas. You can see how at my husband’s site: thesmalltownguy.com.

What methods or ways or problems do you see in creating some Portable Family freedom for your family? Let us know in the comments! Maybe there will be a suggestion or inspiration for you.
